One of the biggest differences between 3-tab and architectural shingles is that they are about 50 percent heavier than 3-tab. This is because the base is thicker, making the shingles sturdier. The adhesives used are also stronger and they have more granules.
How Long Do Architectural Shingles Last?
When asking the question “how long do architectural shingles last,” it is also important to know that the lifespan of any shingle depends on many variables. Although most architectural shingles should last as much as 30 years, extreme weather in some parts of the country could reduce that lifespan. This may include high wind or excessive heat. However, even in areas that see high winds, architectural shingles are rated for winds of as high as 110 miles per hour and, with special bracing, can actually withstand up to 130 miles per hour. There are 3-tab shingle manufacturers that claim their shingles can last up to 30 years, but the average expectancy is between 10 and 20 years. The expectancy is lowered in areas where the weather is extreme. In those areas, 3-tab shingles may only last about seven years.

Architectural shingles usually cost more than 3-tab shingles, although the price difference may not be significant. The average cost for architectural shingles is between $250 and $400 per square foot while 3-tab shingles average $75 to $150 per square foot. Keep in mind that architectural shingles may increase the value of your home and, because 3-tab shingles may need to be replaced sooner, the additional cost may actually be lower over time. Wood shingles cost between $250 and $600 per square foot but require a significant amount of maintenance. They also fade over time and are susceptible to insect or mold damage. Clay tiles cost between $600 and $800 per square foot while slate can cost between $600 and $1500 per square foot. Both clay and slate are heavier than asphalt tiles which means you may need added wall support. Metal roofing averages between $115 and $900 per square foot depending on the type of metal.
Extending the Life Expectancy

Although they have a higher wind rating than 3-tab shingles, they can still be damaged in high winds. If you notice missing, cracked or broken shingles, have them replaced as soon as possible. If you are noticing granules in your gutters when you clean them, it may be time for you to replace some of your shingles or even your entire roof. Be sure to keep your gutters clear of debris to prevent ice dams that could damage the underlayment of your roof, leading to leaks and shingle failure. Be sure to have all vents checked for leaks as well to prevent water from seeping under the shingles.
