There are a number of choices out there when you are shopping for shingles. That said, not every shingle is going to hold up the exact same way. Nor will they cost you the same. Warranties, too, are all written differently, and some provide more quality assurance than the rest. Recently TAMKO upgraded their Limited Lifetime Warranty to compete with increasing industry standards.
Here is what you need to know about TAMKO and their latest warranty changes:
About TAMKO Building Products
For 75 years, TAMKO Building Products, LLC has served North America. Proudly calling itself “America’s Shingle,” TAMKO has been committed to providing building materials made to endure all kinds of climates and inclement weather. Throughout up, TAMKO has also aspired for continuous improvement by incorporating LEAN manufacturing techniques as well as a robust Six Sigma program.
Many contractors around America rely on TAMKO for both quality goods and the rich array of colors. The recent updates to the warranty on TAMKO shingles also ensures simplicity and timeliness, no matter if you are registering or submitting a claim.
About TAMKO Shingles
There are six styles of residential asphalt shingles produced and sold by TAMKO:
- Heritage
- Heritage Premium
- Heritage IR
- Heritage Woodgate
- Heritage Vintage
- Elite Glass-Seal 3-Tab
TAMKO also has three styles of steel shingles: MetalWorks StoneCrest Slate, StoneCrest Tile, and AstonWood.
The basic asphalt shingle is the Elite Glass-Seal. Medium-grade is Heritage and Heritage Woodgate. The best quality is Heritage Premium and Heritage Vintage. With the Elite Glass-Seal, you get around 2-3 layers of protection. All other Heritage shingles provide 4-5 layers of coverage and have a wind rating of 110-130 mph. The Heritage series are laminated and come with a limited lifetime warranty.
The TAMKO Heritage series has received Class A fire resistance. TAMKO also has a distinctive coloring process, adding striking colors and dimension to their shingles. Although the colors available depend on your region, you can expect lovely shades that will complement your home.
Many homeowners choose to use TAMKO shingles because of their overall affordability. Compared to other brands, like Owens Corning, TAMKO shingles are slightly less expensive while providing the same level of protection from the elements, as well as more color choices.
What You Need To Know About TAMKO Shingles Lifetime Warranty
Earlier in 2019, TAMKO launched a brand new limited lifetime warranty that applies to all single-family installations of their Heritage series. That means that any residential, single-family home that has been covered by TAMKO Heritage, Heritage Vintage, Heritage Premium, Heritage IR, or Heritage Woodgate receives the new warranty.
What does this new warranty entail? The main change is the introduction of the 10-year non-prorated Full Start term, in which any replacement shingles and the labor required is covered. In other words, if your new TAMKO shingles fail within the first 10 years, you pay nothing.
Once the Full Start period has passed, the quantity of shingles on your roof is then prorated each year, up to 40 years. Then, the shingles are prorated at 20 percent of the “reasonable cost or quantity of replacement shingles” for as long as you, the original homeowner, stays within that home.
Keep in mind that the new Limited Lifetime Warranty by TAMKO is only applicable to structures made on February 1, 2019 or after. The same warranties for multi-family installations of Heritage shingles remains the same—40 years of coverage. Similarly, the Heritage line still has a 15-year Limited Wind Warranty for winds up to 110 mph (or 130 mph if you select high wind application). Also included is a 10-year Algae Cleaning Limited Warranty.
Transfers
Any single-family purchaser who has Heritage, Heritage XL, Heritage Vintage, or Heritage Premium shingles may transfer their Limited Lifetime Warranty one time during the first 5 years of their purchase. Owners of the Glass-Seal or Elite Glass-Seal can transfer their warranty during the first 2 years of their purchase. Any other transfers are prohibited.
Exclusions For Coverage
According to the latest copy of the Heritage Limited Warranty, the following circumstances are not covered:
- Faulty application, improper storage and/or handling of materials; inadequate ventilation
- Shingles not installed according to the instructions that come printed on the wrapping or within good roofing practices
- Leaks or damages that result from unsatisfactory installation of shingles
- Damages to the building or to property as a result of poor installation, including mold growth
- Tear-off, disposal, and removal of shingles or the costs related to these actions; includes costs associated with metal work, flashings, and underlayment
- Shading, discoloration, and staining from any cause other than algae
- Any Acts of God – lightning, ice damming, wind (expect what is covered), hurricanes, tornadoes, hail, and any other violent storm that causes damage; damage to roof or roof deck from shifting, distortion, and settlement; damage caused by traffic on the roof
