Replacing windows may seem like an easy enough project, especially once the weather is agreeable and the sun is shining. But is springtime truly the best time to replace your windows? Or is there a better time to begin your home improvement project? While many people will advise you that spring or summer is the best time to replace your windows, there are many factors that you need to consider.
Replacing Windows During Warm Months
There are a couple of reasons why replacing windows during the warmer months is advisable. First, you don’t have to worry about heating your home or letting in any uncomfortable drafts. This is something to think about if you plan on replacing multiple windows in your home.
Second, caulk adheres more seamlessly in warm weather than in the cold. For instance, latex caulk can only be applied in temperatures ranging from 40-80 degrees Fahrenheit; silicone caulk works in colder temperatures, but it needs to be warmed before application so it goes on smoothly. Conversely, caulk cannot set properly if it applied in temperatures hotter than 80 degrees, meaning the dog days of summer aren’t the best time to apply it either.
Lastly, you need to consider what contractors call “movement of substrate.” Aluminum and vinyl, among other materials, are known to expand in heat and contract in cold. If you attempt to caulk something when the weather is too cold or hot, it can cause pockets in the caulk or cause it crack when the substrate beneath it expands.
Because of these factors, spring and summer are usually when people schedule their window replacement. This also means it can be difficult to get a contractor on short notice during these months.
Of course, you need to also remember two key points about warm month window replacement:
- Your location. If you are in a region where rain and thunderstorms are likely, you will need to keep that in mind. Pop up storms and other inclement weather, such as high windows, make spring and summer installation risky. The last thing you want is water damage!
- The Heat. Heat is often accompanied with humidity these days. Be prepared for this. You may have to deal with a couple hours or days of uncomfortable heat and humidity while the project ensues.
Replacing Windows During Cold Months
Believe it or not, a lot of people prefer to replace windows during the winter. Even though the air is cold, a brisk, sunny day will give your contractor enough time to prepare for the installation and to heat up their sealants. The air is also dryer, making it easier to apply caulk. The contractor will also work on one window at a time to prevent too much cool air from entering your home.
During cooler months, you can expect windows to be installed rapidly. As long as the weather is above freeing, you have little to worry about. Materials are much more easier to handle, and sealants can still cure.
Other Considerations For Replacing Windows
Regardless of when you schedule your window replacement project, you need to prepare accordingly. Before the contractor arrives, you have a job to do. Here are some things to consider before replacing your home’s windows:
- Be sure to clear any obstacles from the windows. This includes any trees and shrubs that may be hanging in front of the window, especially during the spring and summer, when foliage is thick.
- Same as above, you should also remove furniture away from windows.
- Create a clear path from the windows to the doorways.
- Remove curtains, blinds, and any other window accessories or treatments to avoid damages.
- Clear the surrounding area of pollen and dust and spiderwebs. These things can mix into caulking and cause problems with the installation.
- Purchase some drop cloths or floor-to-ceiling plastic (or both) to protect your home from any debris, paint, and grime that may be emitted during the project. Plastic can also prevent heat or cold air from escaping your home during this time.
- Deactivate your window security system prior to installation.
- Keep any pets secured in a room far from the work site.
Final Thoughts
While you can install replacement windows any time of the year, some months are far more agreeable than others. Spring and summer are popular, but you will be competing with tighter schedules and unpredictable weather. Fall and winter are more budget-friendly, but the cold can be a turn-off, especially if you don’t want to pay extra on utility bills.
