Shopping around for shingles can be difficult, especially when you are looking for information about how long every product is going to last. Some brands are known to outlast the others in terms of durability, while some have shingles that are designed to do better in certain weather condition. However, this information is not always available to the consumer. CertainTeed Landmark shingles, for example, have a lifetime warranty, but does that mean they are going to last forever?
If you have wondered how long CertainTeed Landmark shingles will last once installed but couldn’t find the answer, don’t worry. We are going to explain.
About CertainTeed
CertainTeed is a well-known brand that was founded in 1904 by George Brown as the General Roofing Manufacturing Company. In 1917, the company changed its name to “Certain-Teed,” and came with the slogan, “Quality made certain. Satisfaction guaranteed.” In the 1960s, CertainTeed acquired fiberglass insulation and PVC pipe businesses, which resulted in the introduction of vinyl siding for houses throughout North America.
Presently, CertainTeed is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, has over 6,300 employees, and operates over 60 facilities throughout Canada and North America.

What Are CertainTeed Landmark Shingles?
According to CertainTeed, the Landmark series are shingles crafted from the highest quality materials. Landmark shingles are the heaviest of all shingles of the same classification. For example, compared to GAF Timberlines, Landmark shingles are about 30 percent heavier. They weigh between 250-270 lbs per square.
All Landmark shingles are backed by CertainTeed’s lifetime-limited warranty. The shingles are also:
- Certified to meet and exceed third party (UL) manufacturing standards of quality
- Dual-layered to provide enhanced protection
- Rated Class A fire-resistant
- Have a 10-year StreakFighter warranty for algae-resistance
- Uses NailTrak Shingle Technology
There are different types of Landmark shingles:
- Classic Landmark (otherwise known as just CertainTeed Landmark shingles)
- Landmark Pro /Architect 80
- Landmark Premium – 300 pounds per square for enhanced durability
- Landmark TL – thickest and strongest shingle in the Landmark series
How Long Will CertainTeed Landmark Shingles Last?
In general, shingles come in four main varieties—20, 30, 40, and 50—that are categorized by the product’s life expectancy. However, you should understand that most products come with a lifetime warranty and are often said to “last a lifetime.” However, no asphalt shingle is going to last you a lifetime.
In reality, a 30-year shingle will last around 25 years. If you don’t do maintenance, 30-year shingles have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
The common varieties of shingles include 3-tab singles and dimensional shingles (which have sub-types). All 3-tab shingles are considered “20-year shingles.” Most of the time, 3-tab shingles last around 10-15 years before failing. Dimensional shingles, whether they are luxury, designer, or premium, all fall into the categories of 30, 40, or 50-year shingles.
Note that when a company states something is a “standard dimensional shingle,” you are purchasing a 30-year shingle.
Now, how can this help you determine how long CertainTeed Landmark shingles last? Since the names of the shingles do not contain numbers, it can be difficult to determine which of the Landmark series will outlast the rest.
Here is how long each Landmark shingle will last:
- Landmark – 30-year entry-level dimensional shingle; estimated 20-30 years with routine upkeep
- Landmark Pro – 40 to 50-year dimensional shingle (based off 50-year limited warranty), depending on upkeep
- Landmark Premium – 50-year dimensional shingle
- Landmark TL (Triple Laminate) – 50-year shingle
Landmark Pro, Premium, and TL shingles all have the same 50-year limited transferable warranty, as well as a 15-year StreakFighter warranty, 10-year SureStart protection, and a 15-year 110 mph wind-resistance warranty.
Which Landmark Shingle Should I Choose?
If you are worried about how long CertainTeed Landmark shingles last and if they are worth the investment, then you need to consider a few things. Even if a shingle is rated as a 30- or 40- or 50-year product, there are factors that contribute to decreased durability and lifespan. For instance, the steepness of the roof, the orientation of the sun, the color of the shingles, ventilation, maintenance, and weather patterns all affect the life expectancy of your shingles no matter how good they may be.
Also, consider how long you plan on living at your current address. This can help you decide which Landmark shingles are best for your roof. Just keep in mind that most companies like CertainTeed have named their 30-, 40-, and 50-year shingles Landmark, Landmark Pro, and Landmark Premium, respectively. Because of the weight of Landmark TL, they are also rated as 50-year shingles but may not be ideal for every type of roof.
Final Thoughts on CertainTeed Landmark Shingles
Now that you know that shingles are categorized based on their lifespan and oftentimes named accordingly, you can begin to demystify the life expectancy of various products. This means that CertainTeed Landmark shingles are rated to last 30 years and that Landmark Premium shingles can last up to 50 years. But at the end of the day, whether or not these shingles last that long is whether they are installed professionally and maintained throughout the years.
